Crystal Ball 6.12.14
Well it’s that time of the year. Crystal Ball, one of Chicago’s ballroom dance competitions, starts today. Friends of Windy City Wedding Dance will be competing for the next 4 days in the following dance styles, American Rhythm, Smooth, and Standard. American Rhythm includes Bolero, Rumba, Cha Cha, and East Coast Swing. American Smooth Styles include Tango, Waltz, Foxtrot, and Viennese Waltz. Standard is similar to Smooth but requires a closed frame dance position throughout. Standard includes, Tango, Waltz, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz, and Quickstep.
Tommye Giacchino a mentor and a coach for Windy City Wedding Dance will have several students competing at Crystal Ball. We are excited to see her student Christopher compete. Christopher has only been competing for a couple of years now and has had outstanding results thus far. He dances pro/am with Tommye Giacchino. We will also be watching out for our good friends Jay and Kimari and Dipti and Adam. These 4 outstanding dancers will be competing in the AM/AM division. After months of preparation these competitors will be taking the dance floor pouring out their heart and sole.
Another division, Rising Star, will be held on Friday night. This division is for new professionals on the rise. If a professional couple wins the Rising Star Award for Crystal Ball they are unable to compete in that division the following year. It’s a chance for new professionals to prove themselves in the professional division and which takes a lot of dedication and hard work. A common question that we hear is….. Can you make a lot of money competing? The answer is no. You may be able to cover some of your travel expenses. You cannot make a living competing professionally. Professionals can be paid to teach dance lessons and perform. This is a common way that professionals make their living.
