Willowbrook Ballroom

On October 28, 2016, flames blazed high and in a dense black cloud of smoke, a similar dance ballroom to ours lost their home. The fire completely destroyed the historic Willowbrook Ballroom in southwest suburban Willow Springs. The Willowbrook Ballroom was founded in 1921 and had burned down once before, in 1930. Willowbrook was rebuilt during the Big Band era and has continued to schedule live orchestras for dancing regularly. Dancers of all ages have flocked to the iconic Ballroom to grieve the loss of their beloved home. An amazing thing about The Willowbrook Ballroom is that it was rooted and invested so deeply in the community, which now mourns its loss.

At Windy City Wedding Dance we sincerely share their grief, as we understand the power of dance, the impact it can make in a person’s life, and the healing that can come through dance. We also share the hope of the Willow Springs community that the Willowbrook Ballroom will be rebuilt so generations to come can experience the love, hope and inspiration of a good ole ballroom dance. The flames may have danced through the Willowbrook Ballroom destroying the space, but even as the ashes settle give way to the breeze, what happened inside can never be burned out or extinguished.

A dance studio or dance ballroom is more than just a space enclosed by four walls; but rather, what happens within those four walls is what saturates it, seeps into the foundation, and sanctified the space. In 2014, Windy City Wedding Dance moved into a spacious, sun drenched second floor studio in The Fine Arts Building overlooking Michigan Avenue. While we may still be relatively new to the building, the building itself has been standing and embracing all forms of art since 1884. In the two years we’ve been here, we’ve made so many cherished moments in not only our lives, but also the lives of our students, families, and friends. The studio itself is gorgeous, but it’s how we’ve grown, what we’ve done, who we’ve inspired, and what we’ve experienced that makes our studio something truly remarkable. Whether private dance lessons, wedding dance lessons, group lessons, or in collaboration with other studios or The Studebaker Ballroom, every dancer to step foot in our studio has contributed in transforming our space into our home.

We know we can’t replace the Willowbrook Ballroom but we gladly invite those who are interested in dancing this Friday to our Salsa Party. The party will take place at 410 S. Michigan Avenue on the 2nd floor.  Tickets can be purchased at the door.  Free dance lesson starts at 7:30pm. Party takes place November 4th, this Friday.
