Beginner Ballroom Dance Class

Start with a beginner level dance class where you can start learning the basic foundation of steps, patterns, and technique. In our beginner level dance class we learn a new core dance style each week. By studying multiple dance styles, our students learn about timing and musicality. They also learn how to dance to various songs when attending a special event. Core dance styles include Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Rumba, Cha Cha, Swing. We also teach some core social dance styles like Night Club 2 Step and Hustle. These are great for weddings.

Beginner Level Salsa Dance Class

Oh my those hips! Why is Salsa so popular? Our Latin population is growing and so is our desire to Salsa Dance. Salsa night clubs offer the ability to practice on weekend and weeknight’s throughout Chicago. Normally you will hear other music styles being played at a Salsa Club in addition to Salsa. During our beginner level salsa class you will learn about the basic steps, turns, and counts. After you complete basic salsa we offer an Intermediate Level.  Salsa class is fun and normally the students create a close bond and go out together to social dance at the night clubs. Having classmates and attending outings together boosts confidence. Bachata, Merengue, and Cumbia are other popular dance styles offered at a salsa dance club.

Here are some of the most common questions asked by patrons and how our professional dance instructors in Chicago would answer each question.

What if I don’t have a dance partner?

Don’t let that stop you from dancing. You will have 2 options.

1. Research a dance studio that offers dance classes that rotate. Most ballroom dance school in Chicago, including Windy City Wedding Dance require partner rotation. By switching through the dance class we learn how to dance with everyone. It makes us stronger leaders and followers.

2. Find a dance studio that offers private dance lessons. At Windy City Wedding Dance we teach both singles and couples of all genders. Private dance lessons might be a good way to get started if you are shy and want to gradually be introduced into an intimidating experience.

What if I have never danced before?

You’re not alone. 98% of our clients who sign up to take a dance class have never been to a dance studio. Beginner level dance classes are perfect for students who have little or no experience. Some of our students are signing up for dance classes so they can be more comfortable when they go out with their friends.

How long is each dance class?

Dance classes range from normally from 45 minutes up to an hour. Some students prefer to take private lessons and they double up. Normally when I trained as a student I would take 3 to 4 lessons in a row. For others 45 minutes is plenty.

How many classes will I need?

Everyone learns how to dance at a different pace. If you are interested in taking a group dance class we would recommend enrolling in a 4 week session. Each week the class is offered at the same time and day. If you work or travel schedule would not permit you to enroll and attend the dance workshop then we recommend sticking with private dance lessons. These can be scheduled around your work. Just remember it takes practice and work to be good. What is your expectation of yourself. Some of our students have been with us for years.

How many dance lessons will it take to be good?

“Only one who devotes himself to a cause with his whole strength and soul can be a true master. For this reason mastery demands all of a person.” – Albert Einstein Many estimate that it takes 10,000 hours to master a skill. Be consistent and don’t skip class unless you absolutely need to.

What kind of shoes do I need to wear?

We recommend buying a dance shoe with a suede bottom. We offer options for our students. Normally students will purchase dance shoes after a couples of months. Many ladies will often say ” Why did I wait so long?” Dancing in street shoes can be painful on your feet. Tennis shoes with rubber soles sounds like a good idea but it’s not. We need to be able to spin on the dance floor, and rubber soles grip the floor. This could cause a knee injury.

What kind of clothes do I wear to a dance class?

We recommend starting your class with business casual. Remember if you are attending a ballroom or social dance class you will be touching other people. It’s not respectful to be wearing sweaty gym clothes. We are very close to other people’s armpits.

What if we haven’t chosen a song for our wedding?

You do not have to have a song picked out before you learn to dance. We help our wedding couples by guiding them through different dance styles and song selections.

Where can I take dance lessons?

Do your research and select a dance studio with great reviews. Check out consumer reviews on Yelp, TheKnot, and Google. See what’s happening on their Facebook page. Find a dance studio that is conveniently located next to work or home. Make sure its in a safe neighborhood. Normally students take lessons after work and it can be dark when you are leaving. Check the dance studio schedule and make sure you can take dance lessons within your available free time.

What if we have to miss a week?

Life happens. Just try to get into the dance studio as often as possible if you preparing for a special event.

How often should we come in for dance lessons?

We recommend attending a dance class or dance lesson at least once a week. Some clients who have a shorter amount of time to prepare for a special event may come more than once a week. It should be something your excited about not a burden in your day.

Can we learn how to dance for our wedding in 1 lesson?

As long as your expectations are realistic we can give you some tools, but walking into a dance studio and expecting to feel coordinated after 45 minutes would be a lie. We would love to help you learn how to dance and our minimum recommendation for a first dance is typically 4 lessons if possible.
