Our Year In Ballroom Dance

We couldn’t be more thankful for our first full calendar year in business as Windy City Wedding Dance! As we take a trip down memory lane, we have many people to thank for being apart of our studio. This includes clients, customers, and professionals in our industry. It’s our clients, at the end of the day, that give us this grand opportunity and without you we couldn’t be here! Here is a picture of our very first wedding client!

In 2013 an Idea Was Born

A dear colleague gave me a quick tutorial on how to purchase a domain name. We had worked in a thriving dance studio together in Chicago under our mentor Tommye Giacchino. The business was sold, so we had to hit the pavement running to find work again. In the interim, the brain storming began and the next thing I know I was buying the domain name Windy City Wedding Dance. I had taken a new position back in the corporate world in March 2013. From March of 2013 until March 2014 I tried on a new pair of shoes in the world of staffing and recruiting.

2 Jobs For a Year

Who said working 2 jobs is easy? Dancing was my hobby and my wedding business was an extra stream of revenue to compete in ballroom and pay for my own habit. I always loved working with wedding couples, so I decided to focus my efforts in the category I adored. At the time, I was engaged to be married this past July 2014. I had so many things in common with my clients we were planning our weddings together. My dance goals in 2014 was to qualify and compete in The USA Dance Nationals. My ballroom dance partner lives in Louisville KY and we traveled non stop back and forth to train and prepare. Although I did the very best I could at the staffing agency, I found my heart dreaming about dance all day everyday. The position included constant cold calling and getting tore apart, chewed up, and spit out on a regular basis by decision makers who weren’t interested in what you had to offer. It was a small office and there isn’t a day I forget about the people I worked with for an entire year. This past March the decision was made that it was time for me to exit. It was not my choice, but I have to know they were looking out for my best interest. I didn’t belong there and was destined for something of my own.

My Last Day in Corporate America

So What Happened Next

At first I was sad and my feelings were hurt, but after I pulled up my big girl panties, I started noticing a hike in our inquiries. If there was a time in my life I could try to make a go at building a business from scratch, it was now or never. If I got sucked back into Corporate America I would just be wasting more time doing things I didn’t like.

Out Growing Our Britches

We needed a new location, so on June 15 we moved into our new dance studio on Michigan Ave. You can feel the happiness from all of our clients, instructors, and even visitors that are just passing through! It’s so beautiful. We dance in the Fine Arts Building at 410 S Michigan Ave, across the street from Grant Park.

Studio Rental Space

Shortly after we moved into our new dance crib, we started offering rental space so other instructors could live out their dreams! Today we have 9 instructors who teach clients at Windy City Wedding Dance. We love and adore each and everyone and the clients they bring into our dance school.
